Grand Canyon ~ Death Valley ~ Great Basin (#671)

My travels since Winslow led me to Williams, Arizona, gateway city to the Grand Canyon.  It was an easy car ride from there to one of the 7 wonders of the world.  Seeing it, though, is secondary to the spiritual experience; peaceful, mystical, timeless.

Sacred Solitude at Grand Canyon

This was my 2nd trip to the canyon since a visit in 2007 when I was working at an RV park/motel/bar/restaurant/games room called Happy Jack Lodge & RV.

From there I drove a few hundred miles more, passing through Las Vegas.  What an eye-opener.  That place is a huge bustling city with a frenetic energy that passes beyond natural.  I felt much more at ease when it was in my rear view mirror.

After that, I landed in the Amargosa Valley, Nevada, a stone’s throw from Death Valley to the west.  And that was way too close for me.  Very strong, intensely hot, dry winds came barreling into the valley from the desert.

I had to stay inside my little home on wheels just to breathe.   What a truly unique experience; one that I do not want to repeat.  It brought to mind that great horse movie, Hidalgo filmed in some god~forsaken desert; probably DV. I stayed one night and moved on.

Finally arriving in a very peaceful place called Hawthorne, Nevada, I decided to stay a couple of days and explore.  Ironically, one of the largest ammo dumps in the country lies here.   Nonetheless, it is comfortable high desert with the sweet scents of desert blooms coming in on the morning breeze.

It is a refreshing place where I feel welcome both by my surroundings and the people ~
